My role as your advisor: I am here to guide you through the registration
process and to offer any advice I can on transferring to a four-year
college or university. I am the one who officially enters your
schedule into the system to pre- register you for classes. When
you meet with me, you should already have a list of classes you
want to take; I will look over it to make sure everything is okay.
After the first semester, I will not fill out a schedule for you;
you must bring the completed schedule to me, and we will review
it together. Each semester around advising time, sign up for an
appointment on the schedule posted on my door.
Your role: You are ultimately responsible for your own schedule – you
need to read the academic catalog to determine what classes you
need to take and in what order. You need to plan your course of
study. I am here always to help by answering questions, and I will
do so gladly. If I don’t know the answers, we’ll work
together to find them. Ultimately, though, it is not my responsibility
to make sure you graduate on time; it is yours.
1st semester:
Focus on taking your General Education core classes (44 semester
hours) first. If you know what your major is going to be when you
transfer, get your hands on a Pre-Major Guide that more specifically
shows you what courses to take while at SCC .These can be found
in racks in the lobby of the H-Building (first and second floors),
the T-Building, in Student Services or on the Pre-Major section of our web site.
In your SCC catalog, please review: “Graduation Requirements,” so
you know what is expected right from the start.
Carefully follow the checklist for your Associate in Arts or
Science Degree.
Decide which college/university you wish to transfer to. You
may also want to have a back-up college chosen and plan to apply
to that, too.
Review that college’s web site. On the site, you can usually access the
academic catalog, a schedule for application deadlines, the application
itself, the academic calendar, etc.
It is important for you to know as soon as possible what requirements
you will need to meet at the college you want to transfer to:
For example, will you need to satisfy a foreign language requirement?
How many semesters will you need? What specific math courses
are recommended? (Note: If you do not have access to the Internet
at home, or aren’t sure how to use it, see me and I’ll
get you started.) Many sites now have transfer web sites. Some
even give you exactly what community college courses to take.
Attend College Day on the SCC Campus (usually in September or October. Check the "Announcements" on the transfer site). Typically over fifty
representatives are here to answer your questions.
Become familiar with the SCC Transfer Advising web page.
2nd Semester:
Continue taking your general education core classes.
Visit the Admissions Office of the college you are interested
in (you should call ahead to schedule a tour; find the number
on the web site).
Sketch out your schedule for the rest of your time at SCC to
make sure you have all the credits and classes you need to graduate
on time.
Summer:
You may decide to get some courses out of the way during summer
session.
3rd Semester:
Apply to the college of your choice. (Note: The Academic Support
Center encourages you to meet with a tutor to review your application
essays. This is a free service of the college!)
4th Semester:
If you are graduating in May, apply in Student Services during
February and pay fees in the Business Office. Summer graduates apply in June; fall graduates apply in October.
