Surry Community College faculty have worked together to create a standard set of rubrics, or scoring devices, to measure student ability in the following competencies, or outcomes:
- Critical Thinking
- Writing
- Reading
- Speaking
- Information Literacy
- Quantitative Literacy
- Technology Skills
Your instructors at Surry may use these rubrics, or modified versions of them, to grade your work. You should know how your papers and projects will be graded, so that you fully understand the targets that you are aiming for.
Furthermore, you should know how to describe a skilled critical thinker, a good writer, a strong reader, an exemplary speaker, etc., because you need to work hard to develop those skills! To be an effective employee and citizen of the 21st century, you should possess strong skills in these important areas.
An educated person in our society should know how to think critically, write effectively and correctly, speak well, read closely, evaluate and use information logically, apply college-level mathematical concepts to solve problems, and use technical skills to convey information and achieve solutions. The rubrics posted here more fully describe these crucial life skills.
