Computerized Placement Test

Degree seeking students are required to complete placement
tests which include the following:

  • English (Sentence Skills)
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • College Level Math (if necessary)

SCC accepts scores on both the Asset Placement Test and the Computerized Placement Test.

Applicants who took the ASSET during their junior year in high school may use those results or may retest, using either the ASSET or Computerized Placement Test.

The Computerized Placement Test (CPT) is easy to use. Computer experience is not needed, and the test is not timed. Tests contain 12 to 20 questions chosen from a group of 120 questions.

Any test score is an estimate, not an exact measure of your skills. The computer selects questions based on your answers to previous questions.

The computer will explain how to record your answer as you work. The computer will have directions on how to use a mouse.

ID with a picture required: You should bring appropriate identification with you. This includes your Social Security card and driver's license or picture ID.

Testing Center Hours:

Monday - Wednesday
  8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Thursday
  8:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Friday
  8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Saturday - Sunday
  Closed

The Testing Center is located in the A building Room 204.

**Testers MUST arrive 2 hours before closing of testing center. Test is not timed. Therefore, if you feel you will need more than 2 hours for the test, adjust your time accordingly.

Testing is available year round.

Off campus Testing will be scheduled through area high school counselors.

You can take the test only one time. Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting the test score requirements may make up the deficiencies through completion of prescribed developmental courses.

If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will affect you taking the test under standard conditions, you should inform the testing coordinator before taking the test. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.

College placement testing is offered in the Testing Center. Accuplacer Online is a comprehensive, computer adaptive placement assessment designed to help professional staff place students in appropriate courses to maximize their success. These tests are not timed. Tutorials are available prior to testing for those students who are unfamiliar with computers. See the Director of Disability Services/College Placement Testing for times and locations.

We suggest that all students study for the CPT. A study guide can be obtained from the Student Development Office or from the Testing Center. Be sure to bring a photo ID (such as a driver's license), and a Social Security card for all testing. No calculators are allowed on the CPT. Pencils and paper will be provided for Arithmetic and Algebra calculations.

Curriculum students are placed in English, reading and mathematics courses on the basis of placement testing results. This enables students to enroll in these subjects at a point that is aligned with their achievement level as indicated by the placement test scores. Certain course prerequisites may make it necessary for students to enroll in remedial courses which are identified by a numerical "0" prefix (example RED 080, ENG 080).

All placement tests are offered on a walk-in basis. To ensure adequate time for testing, students must be inside the Testing Center at least two hours before closing to start the CPT.

Note: If the college is closed because of inclement weather, no testing will be given on that day. Check the SCC catalog for any holiday closings or schedule changes that may effect testing. Call Student Development at 386-3264 for further information.

Placement Testing Guidelines for Nursing Students

To be considered for the SCC nursing program you need to complete the college placement testing program. Testing will be available during regular testing hours. The deadline for passing this test is January 31st for RN's and April 30 for PN's. The test may be taken only once for this purpose.

Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting the test score requirements may make up the deficiencies through completion of prescribed developmental courses. To be considered for the pool of candidates for the nursing program, students must complete the prescribed courses with a grade of "B" or better by the end of fall semester prior to the application deadline. It is the responsibility of the student to notify Student Development when prescribed courses are completed.

If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will affect your taking the test under standard conditions, you should inform the Testing Coordinator before taking the test. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.

Distance Education Testing

Distance education testing is also available in the Testing Center. Students enrolled in any distance education course can test in the Testing Center. Students should be aware of the length and difficulty of their tests and plan their time wisely. Tests must be started and finished in one sitting, and must be turned in at least 10 minutes prior to closing.

Hours may vary during holidays and semester breaks. Please call the Testing Center staff at 336-386-3443 for information prior to coming to campus on these days.

Developmental Studies

The goal of Developmental Studies at Surry Community College is to help students succeed in college. Courses in the basic skills of, English reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills are offered. With the cooperation of the Learning Center, the developmental program offers lab classes that supplement the basic courses. In these lab classes, students work individually on the computer and in small groups to practice needed skills.

Placement testing is mandatory for all students taking associate level courses with a developmental prerequisite. Degree-seeking students must take developmental courses when they score below the cut-off scores established by the college on the ASSET or CPT. Students may waive the placement test requirement if they meet any one of the following criteria:

  • Have documented successful completion of appropriate prerequisite developmental courses
  • Have met minimum SAT scores (500 verbal; 500, math) and their scores are not more than 3 years old
  • Have documented successful completion of appropriate college level English and mathematics courses at another college within the past five years

Students placing into both developmental reading and English at the 070 or 080 levels will be advised to complete these courses before taking transfer level courses. Students placing into Reading 090 and English 090 will be advised to take these courses at the beginning of their program as co-requisites or prerequisites to any curriculum courses that they take. Finally, students placing into developmental math should enter the sequence by their second semester at Surry Community College.

Students must achieve a "C" or better in required developmental courses to advance into curriculum courses. Credits for developmental courses are not counted toward graduation and grades are not calculated in GPA.

Students seeking a waiver for any developmental course must receive approval from the Chair of Developmental Studies.

Disability Support Services (ADA)

Surry Community College is committed to making the educational opportunities it offers accessible to all qualified students with current (within the last three years) documentation of a disability. If no current documentation is available, it is the responsibility of the student to have new documentation prepared. Students who have a disability requiring reasonable accommodations are encouraged to use the services available through the Student Development Office. To the best of its ability, Surry Community College will provide auxiliary aids to students who document their need for such assistance. Documentation may include results of medical, psychological, or emotional diagnostic tests, or other professional evaluations which verify the need for adjustments or aids. When possible, SCC will rely on the resources available from community agencies such as the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services and others which provide educational auxiliary aids. The college is not required to, and cannot provide attendants, individually prescribed devices, readers for personal use or study, or other devices or services of a personal nature.

It is the responsibility of the student seeking special services to notify the Director of Disability Services of his/her needs in a timely manner, since it may take some time to acquire necessary aids and to notify the student's instructors. If the student hasn't made a request for services or accommodations in a timely manner prior to enrollment, SCC may not be able to provide them. For additional information, the Director of Disability Services can be reached in the Student Development Office (336-386-3443). Students with hearing difficulties may call 1-800-735-2962 (TTY) or 1-800-735-8262 (voice).

Health Services

First aid supplies are kept at various locations around campus such as Student Development, Administration Offices, Nursing Department, Physical Education Department (Gym), Maintenance Office & shop, as well as all technical and science lab areas.

In the event of any emergency, students should contact the Vice President for Finance and Operations. If further help is needed for the situation, Surry County Emergency Medical Services will be notified. Students will be transported to Northern Surry Hospital in Mt. Airy if deemed necessary by the EMS.

Copies of the Communicable Disease Policy and Alcohol & Drug Abuse Policy are available in the Student Development Offices. All health services are coordinated through the Associate Vice President of Student Development.

A limited accident insurance policy can be purchased upon registration. Because this is a limited policy, students must read carefully the brochure which is provided. If it becomes necessary to receive medical treatment under this policy, students must notify the Business Office within two days of the injury and complete the required forms.

Veteran Services

If a student is a veteran of military service, serves in Reserves or the N. C. National Guard, or is the spouse or child of someone disabled or killed during service, he or she will want to take advantage of the Veterans Services Office within Student Development. The Veterans Certifying Official will help students apply for any educational benefits available to them, and will help answer questions about these benefits. Students receiving veteran's educational benefits must: (1) follow the Standards of Progress for Financial Aid Recipients at Surry Community College; and (2) maintain regular class attendance in order to continue receiving these benefits.

Attendance -  Any student receiving veteran's educational benefits missing one week of day classes or two consecutive evening classes should be reported to the Veteran's Administration. State and federal laws require that all persons receiving veteran's educational benefits attend class on a regular basis. Instructors will be notified each semester concerning who these students are.
