Introduction

Just pondering the term ethical hacking brings to mind all types of questions. Is there such a thing as hacking that is ethical? How does one learn how to ethically hack into systems? Should students be taught how to ethically hack into computers or merely warned about consequences? Where or when is the appropriate place to educate students about hacking? And so on ... Take some time to reference these questions and then utilize the resources below to do some research on the subject.

Center for Democracy and Technology - ”The Center for Democracy and Technology works to promote democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age.” This page has links to information on cybersecurity.

CERT Coordination Center - "CERT is a center of Internet security expertise, located at the Software Engineering Institute, a federally funded research and development center operated by Carnegie Mellon University." Read about recent press releases, CERT publications, and other sources of security information.

Computer and Internet Law - Provided by Social Science Online, this Web page focuses on the legal aspects of computers and the Internet. Computer Security Resource Center - Hosted by the Computer Security Division within The International Institute of Standards and Technology.

Cybercrime.gov - This is the homepage of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. The page offers the following types of information: computer crime policies and programs, actual cases filed in the U.S., laws and recent legislation, and other cybercrime documents.

Cyber Enforcement Resources - "Cyber Enforcement Resources Incorporated is a non-profit corporation, completely dedicated to helping society stay safe in the use of all types of computer technology." The services and information they provide are directed towards three main groups: Law Enforcement, Schools and Educational Institutions, and the General Public.

Privacy International - Privacy International (PI) is a human rights group formed in 1990 as a watchdog on surveillance by governments and corporations. This link will take you to a cybercrime “issues” page which includes summaries of recent world news events on the topic.

Computer Crime Research Center - "Founded in 2001, the Computer Crime Research Center (CCRC) is an independent institute dedicated to the research of cyber crime, cyber terrorism and other issues of computer crimes and internet fraud phenomena. The CCRC is a non-profit organization composed of professionals dedicated to education in the field of computer crimes and cyber terrorism prevention and investigation."

Computer Security Institute - "Computer Security Institute (CSI) is the world's leading membership organization specifically dedicated to serving and training the information, computer and network security professional. Since 1974, CSI has been providing education and aggressively advocating the critical importance of protecting information assets."

The International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists - IACIS is an international volunteer non-profit corporation composed of law enforcement professionals dedicated to education in the field of forensic computer science. IACIS members represent Federal, State, Local and International Law Enforcement professionals.

National Fraud Information Center - "The NFIC was originally established in 1992 by the National Consumers League, the oldest nonprofit consumer organization in the United States, to fight the growing menace of telemarketing fraud by improving prevention and enforcement. In 1996, the Internet Fraud Watch was created, enabling the NFIC to offer consumers advice about promotions in cyberspace and route reports of suspected online and Internet fraud to the appropriate government agencies."

Use the Researching, Evaluating, Citing(APA), Writing, and Check Form links located under the Subject Guides link on the left.  There you will find:

  • Notes and tips on researching

  • Guides to evaluating Internet websites as well as articles

  • Tips for content, structure and grammar

  • A number of citing links in various formats with plenty of examples. (Note: If you do not cite the research/articles you used to write your paper, you will be plagiarizing.)

  • A checklist link for questions to ask yourself concerning the structure and content of your paper after you have finished writing it. Remember to also make use of the Writing Center located in the R building, in the Academic Support Center.
