Introduction

The holdings of the Carlos Surrat Geneology Room include family histories, state and local records, local and national newsletters, census records, and many other materials of interest to those pursuing genealogy. Materials are available for several North Carolina counties as well as Virginia and Tennessee counties. Also available are state and national records. All materials may be viewed and/or copied by visiting the Library (R Building) of Surry Community College. Please check the catalog on the Library's main page to determine if there are materials available that are of interest to you.

If traveling some distance, please call ahead to make sure the Library is open. The hours are posted on the Library's Web site and change periodically. If visiting the campus please stop by the reference desk located on the first floor of the R Building.

The Journal of the Surry County Genealogy Association is published quarterly, is indexed, and contains transcripts and abstracts of county records as well as many othe items of genealogical interest.

American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island - "This database offers access to information concerning the entry of immigrants to the United States through the Ellis Island processing center. Currently, the information covers the years 1892-1924."

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet - "This website is as close to complete as anyone is likely to find. The work of one person, Cyndi's List is an amazing compilation of links to all sorts of genealogical resources. Her subject listing is alphabetically arranged, but the headings are sometimes rather nonstandard, so it might need some care when navigating, especially for the first time."

Ellis Island - "More than 22 million passengers and members of ships' crews entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924. Information about each person was written down in ships' passenger lists, known as 'manifests.' Manifests were used to examine immigrants upon arrival in the United States. Now you can search these millions of records for information on individual Ellis Island passengers."
