Corporate Information / Wright Investors' Service - "Users can search this multipurpose site for company information: public or private, foreign or domestic."

EDGAR Database of Corporate Information.
Searchable database of nearly all Securities and Exchange Commission filings. Comprehensive from May 1996, partial prior to that date.

Fortune 500 (CNNMoney.com) - Annual ranking of the 500 top companies in the United States., 1955 - present (2007).

Foundation Center – Includes links to regional, national and international grant-making corporations and foundations.

Industry at a Glance (U.S Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics) - "Consists of profiles of 12 industry supersectors. Each profile contains a variety of facts about the industry supersector, and includes links to additional statistics." Also refer to the general web site at www.bls.gov for many additional options and information.

Industry Search / Industrysearch.com - "This is a directory of manufacturing and supplier companies, as well as lists industry associations. "

North American Industry Classification System : United States, 2002 / Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget (NAICS) - "It replaces the Standard Industrial Classification Manual 1987 (SIC). This NAICS handbook of codes can be used to isolate a either a market, service or product within an industry. You can use the codes to create/find a list of companies competing in the same market with library resources."

ThomasNet (Powered by ThomasRegister and ThomasRegional) – “Search ThomasNet, the most comprehensive resource for industrial information. Go straight to the source of product, company information, CAD drawings and more...” We also have this complete resource available on CD-ROM in Reference.

U.S. Census Economic Programs - There is an Industry Statistics Sampler; it's searchable by keyword or NAICS code, and gives a general overview of the industry (based on the NAICS code).

United States Securities and Exchange Commission - "Information on US publicly traded companies."

Verizon Superpages – search for business by category or by name. National coverage.

Whitepages.com – allows you to search by business name or category.

Yahoo! Finance - A comprehensive financial site offering—among many other things—links to national and international companies.

Directory of Nonprofit Organizations / Nonprofit Career Network - "This directory contains a list of nonprofit organizations, their addresses, phone, fax, and web addresses. "

Guidestar - "This site is a database of over 850,000 US non-profit IRS-recognized organizations. Most of these are private companies."

Writing Your Paper

Use the Researching, Evaluating, Citing, Writing, and Check Form links located under the Subject Guides link on the left.  There you will find:

  • Notes and tips on researching

  • Guides to evaluating Internet websites as well as articles

  • Tips for content, structure and grammar

  • A number of citing links in various formats with plenty of examples. (Note: If you do not cite the research/articles you used to write your paper, you will be plagiarizing.)

  • A checklist link for questions to ask yourself concerning the structure and content of your paper after you have finished writing it. Remember to also make use of the Writing Center located in the R building, in the Academic Support Center.
