How do I get a library card?

You may apply for a card at the Circulation Desk. You will need to fill out a short form and show your driver’s license or some other photo identification. You need to have a library card in order to check out any materials or use the library Internet workstations. You may also print out a copy of the Library Card Application.

Distance Education students or students taking classes off campus or online only may request a library card via email, mail, or fax. Fill out the form and email to brownl@surry.edu or mail it to Surry Community College Library, 630 South Main St., Dobson, NC 27017. If you prefer, you may fax these documents to 336-386-3692. Your library card will be mailed to you at the address given on your application.

How do I find materials?

All books and audiovisual materials are listed in the CCLINC (Community College Libraries In North Carolina) online catalog, available on any computer in the library. This catalog gives information about the availability of an item, if it is checked out, when it is due back, etc. Visit the online catalog.

What materials may I borrow, and for how long?

Students may check out up to six items, and up to two DVDs. Non-students may check out up to three items (no DVDs). Books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed once if no one is waiting for them. Any accrued fines must be paid before renewing. Overdue fines per day are 10¢ for books or CD and $1.00 per day for DVDs. Periodicals, newspapers, and reference and genealogy books may not be checked out.

How do I renew materials?

Books and CDs normally circulate for three weeks, and may be renewed one time if no one has reserved them. DVDs are not renewable. Renewals may be made by telephoning the library at 336-386-3259 or in person. Please be prepared with your library card number. Any accrued fines must be paid and the student's record cleared before items can be renewed.

What if I don't return materials on time?

Fines are charged for materials which are returned after the due date. Books currently have a 3-day grace period before fines begin. However, once the grace period passes, fines accrue from the first day overdue. Amounts range from .10 per day for books to $2.00 per day for videotapes. A person who owes fines or has overdue materials checked out will not be permitted to check out additional materials. If a book or CD is lost, the borrower will be charged $40.00 per item, a $10.00 processing fee, and any fines which have accrued before the book is reported lost.

May I have materials held for me?

Yes. If you are on campus and the item is in, you may check it out right away. If the item is out, you may place a hold on it online in the CCLINC catalog or in person at the Circulation Desk or telephone or email to brownl@surry.edu to have the item held for you. You MUST identify a valid library card number when placing the hold. You may check on the item’s status at any time during regular library hours by asking at the Circulation Desk or by calling 336-386-3259. We will notify you via email when the item has been returned and hold it for pickup for 5 business days. If you are placing a hold on an item from off campus and it is on the shelf, we will pull it and hold it for you for 5 business days. If it is checked out, we will hold it for you using the procedure outlined above.

What are reserve materials?

Reserve materials for class assignments are sometimes placed at the Circulation Desk by instructors. These materials must be checked out from the Circulation Desk. Restrictions on the reserve materials are placed by the instructor; some items are for library use only (due back at the desk in 2 hours), while others may circulate for a periods ranging from one to seven days. Fines on reserve materials $1.00 per day for books.

What are non-circulating materials?

Some materials are for library use only and may not be checked out. These include magazines, newspapers, reference books, and books from the Genealogy & Local History Collection.

What is interlibrary loan?

When a student needs a book or periodical article that is not available in our collection, it is sometimes possible to obtain the material from another library. You may request materials from other CCLINC (Community College Libraries In North Carolina) libraries through the menu in the library catalog. If the item is not in the CCLINC system, there may be a charge from the lending library. The student is responsible for any charges associated with interlibrary loans he/she has requested. To request ILL, the student should give complete information about the book or article to the Reference Librarian. You may also call (336) 386-3317 or email unswortha@surry.edu.

What is NCLive, and how do I get access? What is off campus access?

NC LIVE stands for North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (Use the Databases page for access). It is a cooperative effort to provide access to many research databases for all citizens of the state, no matter where they live. It is available at most public libraries, community colleges, public universities, and private colleges. The databases include indexing, abstracting, and full-text of several thousand periodical articles, which are very useful to students doing research. To access NC LIVE from home you must be enrolled in SCC classes, be a current faculty or staff member and have a valid library card. You will be using your campus ID and Password for off-campus access, just as you do for student email and Blackboard access. You may contact the Reference Department by phone at 336-386-3260, or email unswortha@surry.edu if you encounter any problems.

How do I get reference help?

A staff member is available when the library is open. You may come in person, email unswortha@surry.edu or call 336-386-3260. If you email a question, please include an email address for a response.
