Dog Obedience
Veterinary Assistant
View Schedule
This class is designed for you to train your dog using a positive
method. At the end of the class, your dog should be able to walk
on a loose lead, come when called, do a one minute sit stay, and
three minute down stay.
Materials need for class: soft treats in small bite size pieces
(cut up hot dogs, cheese, luncheon meats, doggy toy, or something
that really motivates your dog). For large dogs, we recommend a
pinch collar or metal choke chain along with a 6' lead, preferably
flexible leather or cotton. Little dogs should use a metal choke
chain. No flexi-lead, harness, or chain leads will be allowed.
Bring to class: dog, collar, leash, doggie treats, vaccination
record. Dog must be at least 6 months old. Pre-registration required.
This course is designed for those interested in working in the
field as an assistant in a veterinary office. Topics to be covered
will include the following: medical terminology, anatomy/physiology,
animal husbandry, animal disease, parasitology, pharmacology, surgical
packs and instruments, recordkeeping, and the law. Skills taught
may include animal restraint techniques, fecal and heartworm tests,
history of animal and physical exam, skin scrape for demodex/sarcoptes,
ear swab for ear mites (otodecks), temperature, pulse and respirations
and subcutaneous injections. This is an individual course designed
for learning skills to be an assistant. Successful completion of
this course does not result in certification as a veterinary technician.
Certified veterinary technician program is currently not offered
at SCC.
