Welcome to Surry Community College’s Basic Law Enforcement
Training. We take great pride in the long tradition of excellence
provided through training in this program. This course provides the
training necessary to function as a sworn law enforcement officer
in North Carolina. Surry Community College is accredited to offer
Basic Law Enforcement Training by the North Carolina Criminal Justice
Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina
Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission.
The Basic Law Enforcement Training Program provides the student
with the knowledge and skills necessary to be certified and function
as an entry-level Law Enforcement Officer in North Carolina.
The student must successfully complete 33 topic areas of instruction
which also consists of five high liability or practical skill
areas.
There are also four comprehensive exams given throughout
the course. Upon successful completion of these exams, the student
will be eligible to take the state comprehensive exam administered
by a Training and Standards Representative.
The student has one
year from the date of the state exam to be sworn in by a law
enforcement agency either in a full-time, part-time, or reserve
position. This allows the student to receive a probationary certification.
