Study Guide Zone - "This site is a treasure trove of free resources for students, beginning professionals, and anyone else who wants to improve his or her score on a standardized test."
Degree seeking students are required to complete placement test which include the following:
- English (Sentence Skills)
- Reading Comprehension
- Arithmetic
- Algebra
- College Level Math (if necessary)
SCC accepts scores on both the Ass est Placement Test and the Computerized Placement Test.
The Computerized Placement Test (CPT) is easy to use. Computer experience is not needed, and the test is not timed. Tests contain 12 to 20 questions chosen from a group of 120 questions.
Any test score is an estimate, not an exact measure of your skills. The computer selects questions based on your answers to previous questions.
The computer will explain how to record your answer as you work and will have directions on how to use a mouse.
ID with a picture required: You should bring appropriate identification with you. This includes your Social Security card and driver's license or picture ID.

The Testing Center is located in the A building, room 204.
NOTE: Testers MUST arrive 2 hours before the Testing Center closes. The college placement tests are not timed. Therefore, if you feel you will need more than 2 hours for the test, adjust your time accordingly.
Testing is available year round and testing hours are subject to change. Off campus testing will be scheduled through area high school counselors.
Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting the test score requirement may make up the deficiencies through completion of prescribed developmental courses.
If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will affect your ability to take the test under standard conditions, you should inform the Testing coordinator in a timely manner before taking the test. Reasonable accommodations will be provided.
College Placement testing is offered in the Testing Center. Accuplacer Online is a comprehensive, computer adaptive placement assessment designed to help professional staff place students in appropriate courses to maximize their success. These tests are not times. Tutorials are available prior to testing for those students who are unfamiliar with computers.
We suggest that all students study for the college test (CPT).
Note: All placement test review information is provided as a review only, without any warranty or guarantee that your test scores will improve. Surry Community College takes no responsibility in test scores as a result of using the online study guide or any link to a study guide.
A study guide can be obtained from the Student Development Office or from the Testing Center in "A" Building, room 204. Be sure to bring a photo ID (such as a driver's license), and a Social Security card for all testing. No calculators are allowed on the CPT. Pencils and paper will be provided for Arithmetic and Algebra calculations.
Curriculum students are placed in English, reading and mathematics courses on the basis of placement testing results. This enables students to enroll in these subjects at a point that is aligned with their achievement level as indicated by the placement test scores. Certain Course prerequisites may make it necessary for students to enroll in remedial courses which are identified by a numerical "0" prefix (example RED 080, ENG 080).
All placement tests are offered on a walk-in basis. To ensure adequate time for testing, students must be inside the Testing Center at least two hours before closing to start the CPT.
Note: If the college is closed because of inclement weather, no testing will be given on that day. Check the SCC catalog for any holiday closings or schedule changes that may effect testing. Call Student Development at 336-386-3264 for further information.
To be considered for the SCC nursing program
you need to complete the college placement testing program.
Testing will be available during regular testing hours. The
deadline for passing this test is January 31st for RN's and
April 30 for PN's. This test may be taken only once for this
purpose.
Test scores are valid for three years. Individuals not meeting
the test score requirements may make up the deficiencies through
completion of prescribed developmental courses. To be considered
for the pool of candidates for the nursing program, students
must complete the prescribed courses with a grade of "B" or
better by the end of fall semester prior to the application
deadline. It is the responsibility of the student to notify
Student Services when prescribed courses are completed.
If you have a special need (permanent or temporary) that will
affect your taking the test under standard conditions, you
should inform the Director of Disability Services/College
Placement Testing before taking the test.
Reasonable accommodations will be provided.
Distance Education testing and proctoring is also available in the Testing Center. Students enrolled in any distance education course, for example, a Telecourse, Internet, or Teleweb can test in the Center.
The Testing Center offers proctoring services to the community and provides service hours to help students achieve their goals successfully. Students should be aware of the length and difficulty of their exams and plan their time wisely. Tests are to be started and finished in one sitting and must be turned in 10 minutes prior to closing.
Service hours may be different during the semester break.
Please call the Testing Center for more information at 336-386-3443. The Testing Center will also be closed for all holidays recognized by Surry Community College and as indicated by inclement weather.
